Ergonomics can seem like a complex science, but frequently ergonomic problems can be solved by simple, common sense solutions. Repetition is often the culprit; the more you must repeat a specific movement throughout the day, the greater your risk of injury. Injuries that are caused by awkward posture can be prevented by improving your position; Also, when you twist, work overhead, kneel, bend over, or squat you increase your risk of an injury.
Ergmaps’ industrial ergonomic software helps employers and employees identify these problems, implement solutions and then measure the results.
All the extensive tracking capabilities built into our industrial ergonomic software – including employee diary feature – help pinpoint and ultimately eliminate the causes of jobsite injuries. What should you be looking for? Injuries arising from poor ergonomic conditions typically involve the bones, muscles, joints, tendons, and nerves. Symptoms of these injuries include: painful joints; tingling or numbness in hands or feet; pain in wrists, shoulders, forearms and knees, and especially back or neck pain.
Sustained muscle exertion, which reduces blood flow to the muscles and causes muscle strains and sprains, as well as injuries occurring due to repeated contact with hard surfaces (generally referred to as “contact stresses”) frequently contribute to pervasive ergonomic injuries. Other causes include extreme temperatures (which can reduce blood flow) and constant vibrations (which also reduce blood flow and inhibit sensory response).
It’s true that sometimes the solutions to these problems are fairly extensive and expensive, though necessary. However, often by following the evaluation procedures delineated in our industrial ergonomic software, Ergmaps’ clients have learned that the causes of injuries on their worksites were easily fixed. For example, workers can avoid unnecessary bending and stooping by storing frequently-used materials at waist height. The same principle applies to heavier objects, which should be placed – whenever possible – at waist height rather than on the floor or overhead. These solutions may seem obvious, but they’re often overlooked.
